Clusters and Clouds

Clouds - Joni Mitchell
Did I mention I'm a beginner at crochet? My dear friend, Mary came to visit me in August 2012 and I asked her to teach me how to crochet. She does beautiful knitting and crochet projects. She arrived with a set of hooks and yarn for me and I proceeded to learn how to single crochet. She set me up to make my first pair of fingerless gloves.

Now 5 months later, I am in love with crochet and I work at something almost everyday.

One of the side benefits of crocheting is that I find I listen music more often. That sounds crazy coming from a musician doesn't it? But the fact is, music is my work so sometimes I forget to just sit back and enjoy.

As I was making Christmas scarves for people on my list, it occurred to me how lovely it is to weave nice thoughts into each row. And the music seems to add another texture again. There was an unexpected counterpoint in my new hobby.

Now when I crochet, I feel like I'm weaving music into each piece. The other day when I was making my white on white pillowcases, the sounds of Joni Mitchell's Clouds were woven into each billowy cluster stitch. The link will take you to itunes for a preview. "Both Sides Now" is my favorite. It makes me think of my grade 5 music teacher who taught me to play guitar. By the way, I didn't plan on Clouds being my white cluster music...just a happy coincidence!
